When you are ready to choose your skin care packaging -- which we recommend you do as early as possible in your skin care launch plan -- pay attention to what the packaging is made of and how it will or will not react with your product.
Natural, green skin care products are full of great ingredients like essential oils, fatty acids, natural surfactants, and fruit acids, all of which can react badly to certain types of materials. The cream and cream will seep through the brown paper bag. Acrylic cans can crack. Polypropylene is great for battery cases, but not for facial serums. This short guide can help you understand your skin care packaging.
1. Glass
Glass is upscale in cosmetics and is often seen as an environmentally friendly option, although it can be expensive to transport and manufacture. Dark glass bottles are perfect for essential oils, serums and lotions high in vitamin C, as well as for any fancy look and feel you want. Be cautious about glass products for scrubs and bath gels as they can be broken in the tub and shower. Glass can be clear, frosted or colored.
2. Polypropylene Plastic (PP)
Polypropylene Plastic is BPA-free and 100% recyclable in the US (number 5), it is a popular choice for gasket, pump and cap of cosmetic containers.
3. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)
PET is also known as PETE or polyester. PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate, which is used to make plastic bottles for cosmetics and drinks. PET is popular because it provides a sound oil barrier between the plastic and the product inside. This helps prevent chemicals from attacking the plastic and spoiling the material. PET can also be a very transparent plastic that, once set to the desired shape, can look like glass. If your product has a lot of essential oils, high alcohol content, or other solvents, this will be your best plastic option.
4. Metal
The metal has a great appearance but requires a special coating to be suitable for products containing a high proportion of essential oils. Before investing, you should check our product in a metal container to see how it withstands rust and generally looks bad. Metal LIDS can easily be scratched during manufacturing and transportation, so be careful with aluminum LIDS. Metal can also be used as a coating for plastic-lined bottles.
5. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
High density polyethylene (HDPE) is known for its durability and strength; It is highly resistant to most acids and is suitable for products with solvents such as alcohol, as well as surfactants. It is less suitable for products with high essential oils as it may react with the essential oils and soak the plastic into the product.
